Open Arms Lutheran Church

From Our Pastor

My name is Pastor Lucy Wynard - you can call me Pastor Lucy. The most important thing I want you to know is that you are welcome here. We would love to have you as part of our community - offering your gifts and abilities and receiving from us, as we all journey together to find and follow God.

For those who are interested, here is a little bit of background about me that might help you understand where I'm coming from. I'm a military brat - my father's Air Force career took our family back and forth between Nebraska and England six times before I graduated from Lakenheath American High School in England. I went to college at Duke University in North Carolina, graduating with a B.A. in English and Religion. I like words & ideas a lot!

I was raised in the Southern Baptist church and in college my primary spiritual formation came through my involvement in InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. After college I spent four years in the country of Belarus helping to develop a Christian student ministry. I love Russian and the Russian-speaking world. And I have a special compassion for international students and immigrants because I know what it feels like to be the stranger!

In 2007 I married my former Eurasia teammate and friend Daniel Wynard. I like to tease him that I really married him for his apartment in Siberia! I began seminary studies in 2008 and took the long & winding approach to graduate school, graduating in May of 2015.

As an adult adherent to Lutheranism I have particularly come to love sacramental theology, the rhythm of the church calendar, and the persistent emphasis on God’s lavish grace. And I am grateful for the strong foundation in Scripture and the love for God’s world which my upbringing instilled in me. Recently I have thought a lot about hospitality as the center of the gospel.

I am a Myers-Briggs ENTJ and so (unsurprisingly) I love hanging out with people, discussing books and blogs and current events, organizing almost anything, making lists, and playing strategy games. I love bible study, especially when it involves asking lots of questions about the stories - I think, "What on earth was Jesus thinking?!" is often the best first reaction we can have.

Now that you've heard a little of my story, I'd love to meet with you and hear yours! Contact me & let's set a coffee date.

I hope you will come and explore if Open Arms is the place where your story might join with our story. After all, we truly believe that God is the One writing this journey for us all - and that we're better off following God together.

Many blessings, Pastor Lucy
